YWCA Madison / Restorative Justice Workshops

The YWCA Madison offers three-day professional development training workshops for educators, community members and parents. Restorative Justice staff presented the first training in August 2015. To register for the Restorative Justice Workshops, be notified about future workshop dates or if you have additional questions, please email Eugenia Highland.

Workshop Calendar

All sessions focusing on restorative justice in a school setting will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the YWCA Empowerment Center, located at 2040 South Park Street. Purchased individually, each workshop is $170. Attend all three levels and save $150.

About the Workshops

LEVEL 100: RESTORATIVE JUSTICE AS A WAY TO DISMANTLE INSTITUTIONAL RACISM

The Restorative Justice program is embedded in Racial Equity Justice. Through experiential and practical activities participants will ground the work and the philosophy using a racial justice lens. Some of the topics are:

  • What is Restorative Justice? What is Restorative and what is Justice?
  • Honoring Restorative Justice roots and history Indigenous Roots of Restorative Justice
  • The School-to-prison pipeline

LEVEL 200: BUILDING EMPATHY THROUGH RESTORATIVE JUSTICE CIRCLE PROCESS

Empathy has been used as a determinant for virtuous behavior, which is why there is a broad and ever-growing body of research surrounding this topic. In this experiential workshop, we will experience and practice circle process as a natural empathy and resilience cultivator. Some of the topics are:

  • The Power of Storytelling
  • Circle Practice

LEVEL 300: RESTORATIVE JUSTICE IN EDUCATION FRAMEWORK (HOLISTIC RESTORATIVE APPROACH FOR CULTURE SHIFT)

In this workshop, we will explore and engage in dialogue around the framework of Restorative Justice in Education (Evans & Vaandering). Within this framework, Restorative Justice is deeply connected to teaching and learning theory, as well as to school climate and culture. We will explore how RJE can be implemented in the institutional structure of a school through its three components: Nurture healthy relationships, create just and equitable learning environments, and repair harm and transform conflict. Some of the topics are:

  • Restorative Justice in Education framework
  • Restorative Justice beliefs & values
  • Restorative conversations and relationships
